fridays with asa: the vegetable garden

hello there, furry friends!
as you know, i thoroughly enjoy spending time on my deck in the backyard, but i have another important backyard duty.  my dad has constructed a raised gardening bed in my backyard, and every spring, he dutifully plants a vegetable garden.  i, asa, am tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the vegetable garden at all times to protect it from invaders such as birds, rabbits, or insects who seek to thwart my dad's hard work.  secondarily, i ensure that the vegetable garden has no weeds and adequate moisture.  i am truly honored that my dad would entrust me with such a substantial job.
in the picture below, you will observe me at my post in front of the vegetable garden.  my dad has planted cucumbers, pole beans, green peppers, bush beans, and tomatoes this year.

here i am beginning my rounds on the vegetable garden.  first, i am inspecting the cucumber plants, and i believe i see a tiny weed attempting to sprout up.  i shall alert my dad!

next, i am checking the pole beans to make sure they are adequately watered.  they appear to be in prime condition!

now i am checking the bush beans (on the left) and the green peppers (on the right).  my dad is explaining to me how bush beans grow differently from pole beans.

finally, my dad is giving me special instructions with regard to the tomato plants.  he is alerting me to be on my guard for an insect known as the aphid, which particularly enjoys tomatoes.

goodness, let's be honest.  monitoring my dad's vegetable garden is an intensive job, and i'm feeling a mite fatigued.  i had better take a quick break to regain my energy.  one never knows when the garden invaders might arrive!

good day!

That's a very nice garden, and you are doing a fabulous job guarding it! I would like to hire you to guard my husband's tomato plants. Not from birds or critters, but from the other dogs. They are a bit...shall we say...destructive.

Hi Asa - hey, that's a very responsible job, we're mightily impressed at you! We're rather partial to a bit of cucumber ourselves - mmm, refreshing! - and think it must be wonderful to have a dad who grows them from scratch! Wonderful photos - we can see how seriously you take this job. And let's face it - your little brother Booker wouldn't really be ready for such a responsibility would he?!!

Please say thanks to your mama for her comments on FH's last post. The pitbulls owners are very responsible but were obviously horrified at what had happened and FH thinks she was probably picking up on the panic of the other dog's owners rather than from the actual dog! Having the two of us she's used to us having the odd 'friendly scrap' and also as we know a LOT of other dogs she now knows canine body language quite well - for example, JD's been told off by a Mastiff before which might have worried some people, but FH and the Mastiff's owners knew that JD was pushing his luck (he was a puppy at the time!) and that the Mastiff was basically telling him not to be so rude! It was loud but over in about 3 seconds and JD came away a much better mannered pup!

Hey, we'll see your brother at Miss Twix's date night tonight. We'll keep an eye on him and make sure he behaves himself, he he he!!

Oh Asa, we enjoy your Fridays so much! The Booker Man is such an entertainer but you are the deep thinker and philosopher. It is good to be a deep thinker and a teacher, as you are. We need you to come to Alaska and teach these impertinent poodles to STAY OUT of my raised garden bed! They feel it is their duty to keep the soil plowed and watered in their own special way! They also like to "plant" their doggie treats for later enjoyment....We look forward to your garden progress. Have a wonderful weekend, Asa. xoxo

Hello Asa,
I can't believe I've never noticed your blog before because this is a good one and I love looking at you and Booker...such cutie pies!
I found you through a mutual friend, Frankie Furter, and he has the most amazing, funny friends, doesn't he?
Anyway, did you know that Frankie won a prize from my PERSONALIZED PET PORTRAIT GIVEAWAY on Thursday nite? It was a big moment...my coonhound, Daisy, and my tabby cat, Henry, helped me choose the winner. It was very exciting to say the least.
Anyway, you are a good helper out there in the garden! I'm surprised you haven't been tempted to dig holes or pee in there. How do you manage to leave those plants alone? Well, I guess your dad would tell you to stop but you could sneak out to the garden when your dad's not looking....hmmmm
